The Boyle County Public Library offers many fun, educational events throughout the year. Weekly programs include Adult Storytime on Mondays at 9:00 a.m., Crafters Who Care on Mondays at 6:00 p.m., and Storytimes on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. In addition to these weekly events, the following Library-sponsored programs are scheduled for this week:

 

Adult How-To: Bread Making
Monday, August 28th at 6:00 p.m.

The Library offers a monthly "How-To" program series for adults where participants can explore the information and skills needed for a new hobby or activity, guided by a local expert. On Monday evening, the Library will host "Bread Making," presented by Alethea Price, Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent for Boyle County. At this workshop, participants will learn the basics of making bread. This free program will be held in the Community Room.

 

Tween Lab
Thursday, August 31st at 4:00 p.m.

The Boyle County Public Library offers a monthly STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) lab for tweens where they can try out a different experiment each month. On Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., tweens (ages 9-13) will be making Scratch-n-Sniff paintings. Those interested in attending may register for the program by signing up in the Children’s Library.

 

Composting 101
Thursday, August 31st at 6:00 p.m.

The Library will host a composting class for adults on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. Participants can learn how simple and fun it is to recycle vegetable scraps, leaves, and plants into compost. The Boyle County Extension Office will give away a counter-top compost bin as a door prize. This free program will be presented by Boyle County Horticulture Agent, Alexis Amorese.

 

Kid's Homeschool Book Club
Friday, September 1st at 2:00 p.m.

The Kid's Homeschool Book Club will meet this Friday at 2:00 p.m. Led by Children's Librarian Libby McWhorter, this book club is designed for children ages 5-8 and features a book discussion and trivia activities.  This month, participants are reading Shh! We’re Writing the Constitution by Jean Fitz. Snacks will be served. Register for this club in the Children's Library.

 

LEGO Club
Friday, September 2nd at 4:00 p.m.

The Library will host LEGO Club on Friday afternoon 4:00 p.m. in the Storytime Room. The finished LEGO creations will be placed on display in the Children's Library.

 

Computer Classes

In the ongoing effort to promote lifelong learning, the Library offers a wide variety of free computer classes throughout month. This week the Library is offering the following class:

Google Drive on Monday, August 28th at 2:00 p.m.
This class will introduce you to Google Drive, a free cloud storage service provided by Google. Learn about cloud storage and the advantages of using it. If you already have a Google account, please bring your account login information. (Computer and Internet Basics recommended.)

Library Closed on Friday

Computer Classes at the Library this Week

In the ongoing effort to promote lifelong learning, the Library offers a wide variety of free computer classes every month. The following classes are scheduled for this week:

 

Facebook on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.

This class will cover creating a Facebook account, customizing your profile, and determining your security and privacy settings.  If you already have an account, please have your username/password on hand. (Internet Basics recommended.)

 

Mobile Photos on Wednesday, August 23rd at 2:00 p.m.

Learn how to take digital photos using your smartphone or tablet. This class will also cover basic editing tools included on your device. (Android or iPad/iPhone recommended.)

This Week at the Library: August 13-19, 2017

The Boyle County Public Library offers many fun, educational events throughout the year. Weekly programs include Adult Storytime on Mondays at 9:00 a.m., Crafters Who Care on Mondays at 6:00 p.m., and Storytimes on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. In addition to these weekly events, the following Library-sponsored programs are scheduled for this week:

Second Monday Book Discussion Group
Monday, August 14th at 3:00 p.m.

The Second Monday Book Discussion Group meets on the second Monday of the month at 3:00 p.m. in the Mahan House at the Library. Selections include fiction and historical fiction books set in locations around the world. On Monday, August 14th, the group will discuss Beneath the Marble Sky by John Shors. Those interested in participating may register at the Circulation Desk in the Library.

 

Storytimes Resume at the Library
Tuesdays at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.
Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.

Toddler and Preschool Storytimes will resume at the Boyle County Public Library on August 15th after a two-week hiatus. Toddler Storytime (for children ages 18 months – 2 years, with a parent or caregiver) will be held on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. Preschool Storytime (for children ages 3 to 5 years) will be held on Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. and Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. These storytime programs are held in the Children’s Library and feature stories, songs, rhymes, and puppets.

 

Third Thursday Book Discussion Groups
Thursday, August 17th at 10:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The Boyle County Public Library offers a variety of book discussion groups each month, including the Third Thursday Morning and Evening Book Discussion Groups which meet at the Library on the third Thursday of the month at 10:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. respectively. These groups are designed for anyone interested in discussing a wide variety of books in a group setting.

Both groups will meet on Thursday, August 17th. The Morning Discussion group, which is led by Diana Draper, will discuss South of Broad by Pat Conroy. The Evening Discussion group is led by Stephanie Donovan and will discuss Between, Georgia by Joshilyn Jackson. Those interested in participating in either group may pick up a copy of the book at the Circulation Desk in the Library.

 

Computer Classes

Prepare for the Eclipse! on Tuesday, August 15th at 2:00 p.m.

Learn how to access online resources to plan for observing the upcoming solar eclipse and how to watch the live video feed of the historic event.

Teen DIY: Duct Tape School Supplies
Tuesday, August 8th at 4:00 p.m.

The Library will host a Teen DIY workshop on Tuesday, August 8th at 4:00 p.m. Teens (ages 13-18) are invited to get ready for the new school year by making and decorating their own back-to-school supplies with colorful duct tape. In addition to decorating their supplies, participants can make bookmarks, key chains, pencil pouches, and more. The Library will supply the duct tape; participants will need to bring their own school supplies. Registration is required. Teens interested in attending may register by calling the Library.


Coloring and Conversation
Thursday, August 10th at 6:00 p.m.

The Library will host a coloring club for adults on Thursday, August 10th at 6:00 p.m. Many adults have rediscovered the joys of coloring as a way to relax and combat stress. The club, which is done in partnership with the Boyle County Cooperative Extension office, meets on the second Monday of the month in the Mahan Gallery.


Kid's Homeschool Book Club
Friday, August 11th at 2:00 p.m.

The Kid's Homeschool Book Club will meet on Friday, August 11th at 2:00 p.m. Led by Children's Librarian Libby McWhorter, this book club is designed for children ages 5-8 and features a book discussion and trivia activities.  This month, participants are reading Who is Jane Goodall? by Roberta Edwards. Snacks will be served. Register for this club in the Children's Library.

 

Soul of 2nd Street Mini History Conference
Friday, August 11th from 1:00-4:00 p.m.

On Friday, August 11th, the Library will host the Soul of 2nd Street Mini History Conference. The conference will provide an opportunity to learn about local African-American history. The keynote address will be given by Dr. Betty Sue Griffin, a dynamic speaker not to be missed. In addition to Dr. Griffin's presentation, various local historians will speak on their current research projects. This free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and will be held in the Community Room at the Library.
