The Friends of the Library begin their 2018 Fall Program Series at the Library on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. with "Danville's Tree Planting Initiative." Dr. Beau Weston, Professor of Sociology at Centre College, will talk about the ongoing project he started to replant hundreds of trees in downtown Danville. Currently in Year Five of a ten-year community project, the goal is to plant 500 trees in Danville. Since the start of the initiative, about 50 trees have been planted along the main streets of Danville each year. This year, to honor the 225th anniversary of Kentucky statehood, 25 tulip poplars – the state tree – were planted, in addition to other trees.

This is a wonderful joint effort of many individuals and organizations. The City of Danville plants the trees; the County Extension Agent chooses the species; the town Beautification Committee picks the specific spots to plant; the Wilderness Trace Community Foundation holds the money; and, if all goes well, Kentucky Utilities gives us a grant to match what we raise locally of up to $5000 each year.”

This program will be held in the Community Room at the Library. All are welcome to attend. Friends of the Library events are free and open to the public. An interpreter for the deaf is available upon request by contacting the Library 48-hours in advance.
