Second Monday Book Discussion Group

The Second Monday Book Discussion Group meets on the second Monday of the month at 3:00 p.m. at the Library. Selections include fiction and historical fiction books set in locations around the world. On Monday, December 10, the group will discuss 1222 by Anne Holt. Those interested in participating may pick up a copy of the book at the Circulation Desk in the Library.

 

“I Survived: 1893” Breakout

The library was founded in 1893. On Monday, December 10 at 4:30 p.m. tweens are invited to an “I Survived: 1893” breakout event. Participants will try to beat the breakout game by surviving the various challenges and disasters that occurred that year. For ages 9-13.

 

Mindfulness Monday: Snow Floam

This monthly series combines crafting and mindfulness education. On Monday, December 10 at 6:00 p.m., enjoy an hour of mindfulness while making snow floam. Participants will focus on shaping and squishing the floam to help relieve some stress.

 

 

KidStir

On Tuesday, December 11 at 4:00 p.m., the Library will host KidStir, a cooking class for kids. This month, participants will be decorating cookies. Registration is required. Class size is limited to 20. For ages 5-8.

 

Gingerbread Zombies

On Thursday, December 13 at 4:30 p.m., teens and tweens are invited to put a fun twist on a classic holiday activity by decorating gingerbread cookies as zombies. For ages 9-18.

 

Coloring & Conversation

The library will host a coloring club for adults on Thursday, December 13 at 6:00 p.m. Many adults have rediscovered the joys of coloring as a way to relax and combat stress. The club, which is done in partnership with the Boyle County Cooperative Extension office, meets on the second Thursday of the month in the Mahan Gallery.

 

BCPL Trivia Night

The library will celebrate its 125th anniversary next month. As a lead up to the big event, weekly trivia nights will be held in December on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room at the library. On Thursday, December 13, patrons can play trivia with a team to win items like tote bags, pens, travel mugs, and more. The categories will feature questions on BCPL, Kentucky libraries, and general library facts. All ages and families are welcome.

 

Origami Club

On Friday, December 14 at 4:30 p.m., tweens can improve their skills at origami by trying out new projects. Many tutorials with varying levels of difficulty will be available. For ages 9-13.

 

Delayed Opening

The library will open at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 14.

This Week at the Library: December 3-8, 2018

FRENCH CAFÉ
Monday, December 3 • 5:00 p.m.

On Monday evening at 5:00 p.m., the library will host French Café. People of all ages can gather together in a relaxed atmosphere to practice speaking French in casual conversation. This event is great for those who are fluent speakers as well as for those who are just learning the language.


SPECIAL CODING EVENTS @THE LIBRARY

Computers are everywhere, changing every industry on the planet. To encourage computer science engagement, the library partners with Lucy Minichillo and Christine Shannon to offer a weekly coding class to middle and high school students. This year, in addition to the weekly class, the library also will participate in the Hour of Code, an annual global event which takes place in early December during Computer Science Education Week.

Those interested in participating in either of BCPL’s Hour of Code events will need to call or stop by the library to register. All coding classes are held in the computer lab at the library.

 

CODING CLASS
Monday, December 3 • 4:00 p.m.

Students can join the weekly coding class on Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. This self-paced class uses the CodeHS curriculum. No experience is necessary. Those interested in participating should email danville.code@gmail.com. For grades 6-12.

 

HOUR OF CODE I
Wednesday, December 5 • 4:30 p.m.

On Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., younger students will learn storytelling with coding when they use "Code an Unusual Event" from Google's CS First Hour of Code activities. For ages 7-9. Registration is required.

 

HOUR OF CODE II
Thursday, December 6 • 4:30 p.m.

On Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., older students will use the MIT App Inventor "Talk to Me Mobile App." For ages 9-18. Registration is required.

 

 

FAMILY GAME NIGHT
Monday, December 3 • 4:00-7:00 p.m.

On Monday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. the library will host a Family Game Night. All ages are welcome to stop by and play a wide variety of board games, including both classic and newer games. Pizza and snacks will be available. This event will be held in the Community Room.


COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE
Wednesday, December 5 • 10:30 a.m - 5:30 p.m.

The City of Danville Community Blood Drive will be held this Wednesday at the Library. Kentucky Blood Center is encouraging Kentuckians to roll up their sleeves, donate bloods, and help Kentucky patients. To schedule a donation, visit kybloodcenter.org or call 800.775.2522.

Saturday, December 8 • 2:00 p.m.

On Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. authors who participated in the recent Memories Worth Remembering writing workshop will read from their recollections, each with a unique voice and perspective. This event will be held in the Community Room.

 

CHESS CLUB
Saturday, December 8 • 2:00-4:00 p.m.

On Saturday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., the Library will host Chess Club. All ages and skill levels are welcome to come play (or learn how to play) the game of chess. This event will be held in the Community Room.

This Saturday at the Library

 PICTURES WITH SANTA
Saturday, December 1 • 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Santa is coming to Danville on Saturday, December 1 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The library will host "Pictures with Santa," sponsored by the Heart of Danville. Santa will visit with children and listen to their Christmas wishes while posing for photos. This event will be held in the Reading Room at the library and is free of charge. After seeing Santa, stop by the Community Room to enjoy a fun holiday craft.

 

CHLDREN'S ORNAMENT WORKSHOP
Saturday, December 1 • 2:00-4:00 p.m.

The library will host an ornament workshop for children on Saturday, December 1 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Guests can choose from three ornament designs to make and take home. This program will be held in the Storytime Room.


SIP2GO SPECIAL NEEDS NIGHT
Saturday, December 1 • 5:00-7:00 p.m.

On Saturday, December 1 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., the library will also host SIP2GO: Special Needs Night, an after-hours event for patrons with special needs and their families. Guests will be able to explore the different SIP2GO learning stations at their own pace. A quiet room will also be available for those guests who need some time away from the noise and activity. Registration is not required to attend.
