Book Reading with Ayana Mathis
In collaboration with the Humana/Centre College Library Speaker Series, the Friends of the Library will host a book reading with author Ayana Mathis on Tuesday, February 24th at 4:00 pm in the Community Room at the Library. This event is free and open to the public.
Mathis' first novel, The Twelve Tribes of Hattie, was a New York Times Bestseller, a 2013 New York Times Notable Book of the Year, an NPR Best Books of 2013, and was chosen by Oprah Winfrey as the second selection for Oprah's Book Club 2.0. The novel tells the story of the children of the Great Migration through the trials of one unforgettable family. It is a story of love and bitterness, and the promise of a new America.
Mathis is a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop and a recipient of the 2014-15 New York Public Library's Cullman Center Fellowship. She taught Creative Writing at The Writer's Foundry FMA Program at St. Joseph's College, Brooklyn. She is an Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
