SUPERHERO PARTY
Monday, April 30th from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.

The Library will host a Superhero Party on Monday afternoon from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Teens and tweens can come party with super games, crafts, movie screenings, and snacks inspired by their favorite superheroes. This event will be held in the Community Room. For ages 9-18.

 

BUTTERFLY EXHIBIT CLOSING RECEPTION
Monday, April 30th from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

The Library will host a closing reception for the "Butterflies!" art exhibit on Monday evening from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the Mahan Gallery. Patrons are invited to come celebrate the art and artists who contributed to the exhibit. Light refreshments will be available.


 

COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE
Wednesday, May 2nd from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The City of Danville Community Blood Drive will be held in the Community Room at the Library this Wednesday, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Those who register and give will receive a "Donate Blood, Y’all" purple t-shirt. NOW PLAYING NIGHT
Thursday, May 3rd at 4:00 p.m.

On Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. the Library will host “Now Playing Night,” an afternoon where tweens can have fun hanging out the Library playing board games and watching a movie. This month will feature The Incredibles, an animated film from 2004 about a family of undercover superheroes who are forced back into action when their "biggest fan"-turned-villain is now bent on their destruction. For ages 9-13.

 

MEDICARE MADE CLEAR
Thursday, May 3rd at 6:00 p.m.

On Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m., the Library will host "Medicare Made Clear," an interactive, educational seminar that will cover the basics of Medicare. Presented by Richard Manarchy, attendees will gain an understanding of Medicare parts A, B, C, and D, including who is eligible, coverage options, enrollment times, and what to do next.

 

KID'S HOMESCHOOL BOOK CLUB
Friday, May 4th at 2:00 p.m.

The Kid’s Homeschool Book Club will meet on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Led by Children's Librarian Libby McWhorter, this book club is designed for children ages 5-8 and features a book discussion and trivia activities.  This month, participants are reading One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia. Snacks will be served. Register for this club in the Children’s Library.

 

LEGO CLUB
Friday, May 4th at 4:00 p.m.

The Library will host LEGO Club on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the Storytime Room. The finished LEGO creations will be placed on display in the Children’s Library.

 

PROTECT YOUR HISTORY: "HOW TO LABEL AN OBJECT"
Saturday, May 5th at 2:00 p.m.

On Saturday, May 5 at 2:00 p.m., the Library will host "How to Label an Object," part of the "Protect Your History" monthly series offered at the Library. At this workshop participants will learn how to correctly label personal collections so the history doesn’t get lost.  The class will be an introduction on proper supplies, methods, and materials to use. This program will be held in the Mahan Gallery.

Family Science Expo this Sunday

On Sunday, April 29th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., the Library will host a Family Science Expo featuring a wide variety of hands-on science demonstration stations performed by Centre College student science organizations.

The expo will feature a variety of activities, including: making recycled paper; slime and kinetic sand; ulnar nerve simulation and making model neurons; modeling the structure of DNA; robots and learning binary code; liquid nitrogen and liquid hydrogen demonstrations; and a scavenger hunt related to the various stations.

The Family Science Expo is sponsored by BCPL and Centre College American Chemical Society. The event will be held in the Community Room at the Library. All ages are invited to attend this free event.

This Week at the Library: April 23-29, 2018

Tween Writing Group
Monday, April 23rd at 4:00 p.m.

On Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., the Library will host a writing group for tweens. Participants will have fun with creative writing using prompts and writing games. This month tweens will create blackout poetry. For ages 9-13.

 

Adulting: "Where Does Your Money Go?"
Monday, April 23rd at 6:00 p.m.

On Monday evening at 6:00 p.m., the Library will host "Adulting," a monthly program series that explores the different skills adults need to thrive. This month's program is part of the Money Smart Week series. At this workshop, participants will discover how good money management skills can keep them out of debt. They’ll learn the basics of money management, including making a budget, identifying spending leaks, saving money, and getting out of debt.

This program is offered in partnership with the Boyle County Extension Office and will be held in the Community Room at the Library.

 

Mindfulness Monday
Monday, April 23rd at 6:30 p.m.

Once a month, the Library provides a quiet space in the Mahan Gallery for anyone wanting to practice meditation and mindfulness. On Monday evening at 6:30 p.m., there will be a guided session that will include a brief discussion about using doodling to promote mindfulness.

 

Fancy Nancy Tea Party
Tuesday, April 24th at 4:00 p.m.

Come party and play games inspired by Fancy Nancy, a favorite book character by Jane O'Conner! Limited spaces available. Call or stop by the Children's Library to register.


Teen Book Chat
Tuesday, April 24th at 4:00 p.m.

On Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., the Library will host a book chat for teens. This informal book group provides a place for teens (ages 13-18) to talk about their favorite books with fellow bibliophiles.

 

Financial Tea: Getting Into Investing with Any Amount of Money
Wednesday, April 25th at 1:30 p.m.

As part of Money Smart Week, the Library will host an investing workshop with financial planner, Dawn Nelson on Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. At this free workshop, participants will learn the basics of investing and how to work with the money available to them.

 

Tween Lab: Galaxy Jars
Thursday, April 26th at 4:00 p.m. 

The Boyle County Public Library offers a monthly STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) lab for tweens (ages 9-13) where they can try out a different experiment each month. On Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., tweens will make colorful Galaxy Jars by combining different ingredients in a mason jar.

 

Reducing Home Energy Use
Thursday, April 26th at 5:00 p.m. 

In this Money Smart Week program, Alexis Sheffield from the Boyle County Extension Office will discuss effective ways to reduce home energy use through creative landscaping. This free event will be held in the Community Room at the Library.

 

History Café
Thursday, April 26th at 6:00 p.m. 

On Thursday evening, the Library will host the History Café. This monthly event provides a place where people can gather and chat about local history. This month will feature a discussion about the history of banks in Boyle County.

 

Spring Film Series: Variety Showcase (Week 6)
Thursday, April 26th at 7:00 p.m. 

The Friends of the Library will conclude their annual Spring Film Series on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m in the Community Room. The post-film discussion will be led by Charles Vahlkamp. Popcorn will be available and there is no charge for admission.

This week we'll be showing Chariots of Fire (1981), a film about two British track athletes, one Jewish the other Christian, who compete in the 1924 Olympics.

Job Openings at the Library for Summer Youth Services Interns

The Boyle County Public Library is looking for two Summer Youth Services Interns who will assist the Children’s, Youth, and Outreach Librarians in providing exemplary customer service to children, youth, and their families both in the Library and at remote locations where library programming to children and youth is offered this summer. 

This is a temporary, full-time internship lasting for 12 weeks. Enrollment in or completion of undergraduate degree is required.

Comic Book Club for Tweens
Monday, April 16th at 4:00 p.m.

Tweens can discuss their favorite comics at the Comic Book Club on Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Tweens will also be able to preview new comics and do activities inspired by favorite characters and stories. For ages 9-13.

 

Teen Gaming @BCPL
Tuesday, April 17th at 4:00 p.m.

On Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., the Library will host Teen Gaming, featuring video games, movies, and snacks. This program will be held in the Community Room and is for ages 13-18.

 

Third Thursday Book Discussion Groups
Thursday, April 19th at 10:00 a.m. & 4:00 p.m.

The Library offers a variety of book discussion groups each month, including the Third Thursday Morning and Afternoon Book Discussion Groups which meet at the Library on the third Thursday of the month at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. respectively. These groups are designed for anyone interested in discussing a wide variety of books in a group setting.

This month the Morning Discussion group will discuss Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. The Afternoon Discussion group will discuss Eli the Good by Silas House. Those interested in participating in either group may pick up a copy of the book at the Circulation Desk in the Library.


Family Craft Night: Recycled Art
Thursday, April 19th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

In celebration of this year’s Earth Day, the Library will host a Family Craft Night on Thursday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participants will be able to upcycle everyday materials to make unique works of art. Craft stations will be set up for artists of all ages. This family program will be held in the Storytime Room.

 

ASL Conversation Group
Thursday, April 19th at 6:00 p.m.

The Library will host American Sign Language Conversation Group on Thursday evening  at 6:00 p.m. This monthly event is community led and provides a casual location where people can practice using ASL. All levels of ASL learners or users are encouraged to participate. For more information, contact Caleb Conover at the Library.


Spring Film Series: Variety Showcase (Week 5)
Thursday, April 19th at 7:00 p.m.

The Friends of the Library continue with their annual Spring Film Series on Thursday, April 19 at 7:00 p.m. Films will be shown on Thursday evenings in the Community Room through the end of April. The post-film discussion will be led by Charles Vahlkamp. Popcorn will be available and there is no charge for admission.

This week we'll be showing The Manchurian Candidate (1962), a film about an American POW who is brainwashed by Cold War villain.

 

Best Plants for Butterflies
Friday, April 20th at 4:00 p.m.

On Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., Alexis Sheffield, Horticulture Agent from the Boyle County Extension Office, will talk about which plants are best for attracting butterflies. This program will be held in the Community Room at the Library.

Second Monday Book Discussion Group
Monday, April 9th at 3:00 p.m.

The Second Monday Book Discussion Group meets on the second Monday of the month at 3:00 p.m. in the Mahan House at the Library. Selections include fiction and historical fiction books set in locations around the world. On Monday afternoon the group will discuss Digging to America by Anne Tyler. Those interested in participating may pick up a copy of the book at the Circulation Desk in the Library.

 

Backstage at the Norton Center for the Arts

Monday, April 9th at 4:00 p.m. 
     
(Meet in the Norton Center lobby at 3:50 p.m.)

The Friends of the Library will host "Backstage at the Norton Center: 39 Years of Stories" on Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the Norton Center for the Arts. The public is invited to take a tour of the Norton Center at Centre College led by Mark de Araujo who will share stories about the theater from the past 39 years.

Those planning to attend are strongly encouraged to wear flat shoes or walking shoes because climbing and uneven surfaces are part of the tour. This program will be held offsite at the Norton Center for the Arts at Centre College. Those interested in attending should meet at the Norton Center lobby 10 minutes before the start of the tour. All are welcome to attend.

 

Tween Master Builders
Monday, April 9th at 4:00 p.m.

On Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., tweens can stop by the Library to build or create anything imaginable using a wide variety of art and building supplies, including LEGOs, pipe cleaners, origami paper, yarn, and more. Snacks will be provided. For ages 9-13. 


Coloring & Conversation
Thursday, April 12th at 6:00 p.m.

The Library will host a coloring club for adults on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. Many adults have rediscovered the joys of coloring as a way to relax and combat stress. The club, which is done in partnership with the Boyle County Cooperative Extension office, meets on the second Thursday of the month in the Mahan Gallery.

Genealogy Craft this Saturday
