Join us for our Annual Meeting on March 14th -- Pi Day. We'll bring everyone up to date on what's happening with the Friends. We'll elect officers and find out about recreational math while we enjoy -- what else? -- pies!

Annual Meeting: "Pi oh Pi, Math Can Be Fun!" | Thursday, March 14 at 4 PM

Featuring Dr. John Wilson, Centre College Math Professor

Come taste a small sample of delicious mathematical ideas that are most appropriate on Pi Day at the library. What other days have interesting mathematical connections? This whimsical use of numbers falls into the area of recreational mathematics. Many puzzles, games, and card tricks have just a bit of mathematics at their core. In this talk you will see a card trick based on rearrangements called permutations that are common objects of study in many areas of mathematics. You will also explore the logic and theory of sets that can be found in a new puzzle called Squarely. In keeping with the theme, we'll be serving individual pies in a variety of sweet and savory flavors. Please join us! (Community Room)

Through dues and donations, the Friends of the Library help supplement the Library’s programs and services. The Friends sponsor an annual meeting each year, as well as other programs, most notably the Summer Reading Program.

The Summer Reading Program is the library’s biggest multi-generational program series of the year. The library staff are very thankful for the Friends of the Library (FOTL) who are major financial contributors to the Summer Reading Program, and who helped turn program planning dreams into reality while providing countless hours of volunteer work.

SRP 2023 was a record success with 1,111 active readers who earned over 3,300 prize books. Library staff planned and presented 110 events in the 60 days of Summer Reading. That ambitious schedule simply couldn't have happened without the tireless efforts of staff and of the Friends of the Library members. Beyond being the major financial sponsor of the Summer Reading program, Friends members showed up every week to help with Starlight Movie Nights, to help with the Thursday FunDay events held in the Jennie Rogers Community Center gym and Danville High School’s Gravely Hall, and in countless other ways. Their support was essential to the success of the summer events.

Friends funds also cover the cost of sponsorship for the Great American Swing Dance held at the library each June.
