Alzheimer's Association to Explore Communication Strategies

On Wednesday, October 14th at 3:00 pm, the Alzheimer’s Association will present on Effective Communication Strategies. The presentation will explore how communication takes places when someone has Alzheimer’s. Attendees will learn how to decode messages from someone with dementia, as well as identify strategies to help connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.

Registration is required to ensure that adequate amount of materials are available. Those interested in attending may register at the Library or by calling the Alzheimer's Association at 1.800.272.3900. "A Close-up Lens on Nepal" with Karl Benson

The Friends of the Library continue their 2015 Fall Program Series on Monday, October 12th at 7:00 pm with "A Close-up Lens on Nepal." Karl Benson, former director of the Boyle County Public Library, will give a close-up view of the cultural and scenic landscape of Nepal.

Benson, who visited Nepal a year ago, is well-travelled in the United States, Mexico, Central America, the Middle East, and Europe. On Monday evening he’ll share insights into Nepal’s unique blend of Hindu and Buddhist cultures along with photos of important landmarks, views of the Himalayas, and friends made in this mountainous nation.

This free program is open to the public and will be held in the Community Room at the Boyle County Public Library.

Job Opening at the Library

Outreach Librarian

The Boyle County Public Library is looking for an energetic and dedicated person to provide library outreach services to Boyle County residents. This person will drive to locations throughout Boyle County and provide library services to residents who are unable to use library services through traditional means.

As a member of the Outreach staff, this person will be supervised by the Programming Coordinator and have a variety of job duties.  One of the most important duties will be to serve the informational, reference, and reading needs of library patrons of all ages, wherever the need exists.

Unpuzzling Poe Events: Week 3

Unpuzzling Poe events continue this week at the Library and in the community. Here's a look at what's coming up:



Bloody Boyle Blood Drive

Wednesday, October 7th from 10 am - 5 pm

Poe-themed blood drive with Central Kentucky Blood Center. Go to or call 800.775.2522 to register to donate. Those who donate will receive a free pass to the Hustonville Haunted House.

Genealogy Workshop

Wednesday, October 7th at 3:30 pm

On the anniversary of Poe's death, we offer you the chance to learn about the Library's resources that can aid in the research of those who have passed in your family! Registration is required. Call the Library to register. 859.238.7323

Thursday, October 8th at 4 pm

Enjoy the October Tween Book Club selection translated to film! This 2004 film follows three orphaned siblings as they attempt to stop an evil relative, who is plotting to steal their parents' fortune. (108 minutes; Rated PG)

Friends of the Library Fall Film Series

Thursday, October 8th at 7 pm

The Boyle County Friends of the Library will sponsor a film series devoted to Edgar Allan Poe.

Synopsis: In this 1935 film, a brilliant surgeon obsessed with Poe saves the life of a beautiful woman and goes mad when he can’t have her. (1935 Film; 61 minutes)

Forkland Heritage Festival and Revue

Friday, October 9th from 9 am - 9 pm

Saturday, October 10th from 9 am -  9 pm

Among other festivities, you will find skits illustrating Abraham Lincoln's fondness of Edgar Allan Poe and displays of 19th century Poe artifacts in the Lincoln Museum.

Shelby City Cemetery Tour

Come learn about the history of the cemeteries and interesting people buried therein! This is a walking tour on uneven ground.

October Computer Classes

The Boyle County Public Library offers free computer classes every month. The computer classes to be held at the Library in October include:

• Computer Basics - October 5th at 10:00 am & 6:00 pm

This class covers the basic elements of the Windows PC operating system, including using a mouse and keyboard; highlighting, copying, and pasting text; common menus, toolbars, and shortcuts; and an overview of software and storage media.


• Facebook (2-hour workshop) - October 12th at 11:00 am

Facebook is a popular social networking site that allows you to connect with others. Learn how to upload pictures; update your status; set your privacy and account settings; and search for family and friends. (Basic computer and internet skills recommended.)


• Online Library Resources - October 19th at 10:00 am & 6:00 pm

This class offers a brief introduction to the online resources available to Library patrons. It includes how to sign into your library account from the Library’s website; using the catalog via the internet; and the online databases and subscriptions free to library users. Library card and basic familiarity with the internet is helpful, but not required.


• Book Lover’s Guide to the Internet - October 21st at 2:00 pm

Learn about the various online tools that can help you find your next great read or fuel your next book club discussion. Participants should have basic computer and internet skills.


• Resume Writing Workshop - October 27th at 2:00 pm

Learn how to create or update a basic, well-written resume.
