In cooperation with Kentucky Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Friends of the Library will welcome writer and performer Anne Shelby as Aunt Molly Jackson: Pistol Packin' Woman to our Friends Annual Meeting!

Born in Clay County in 1880, Aunt Molly Jackson spent most of the first 50 years of her life in coal camps in southeastern Kentucky, as a midwife, union organizer, and as the daughter, sister, and wife of coal miners. Later in life, Jackson became deeply involved in advocacy and awareness for mining communities, developing a national reputation for her artistic endeavors as well as her civic work.

Our performer, Anne Shelby, is the author of ten books, including poetry, folktales, newspaper columns, and books for children. Her plays have been produced by a number of state and regional theatres. Shelby has taught at the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts, the Appalachian Writers Workshop at Hindman Settlement School, and at Lexington’s School for the Creative and Performing Arts. A native of southeastern Kentucky, she lives on Teges Creek in Clay County, a few miles from the birthplace of Aunt Molly Jackson.

The Friends of the Library will also conduct their annual members meeting, and library staff members will share information about upcoming summer events at BCPL. Join our Friends in supporting the library's programs, and enjoy an afternoon of entertainment!

This program was funded in part by Kentucky Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
