Libraries all across Kentucky are making it easier for people to use their local library when coronavirus restrictions are eased and libraries can reopen. The board of trustees of the Boyle County Public Library voted May 14, 2020 to join this state-wide initiative by providing a one-time waiver for all patrons of overdue fines and other miscellaneous fees assessed prior to March 16, 2020, when the library closed to protect the health and safety of staff and patrons.
BCPL Fine Amnesty FAQ
1. I had overdue fines before the library closed due to the pandemic. Does this affect me?
YES! This initiative is specifically for you. All overdue fines and fees assessed prior to the library’s closing on March 16, 2020, have been waived.
2. I’ve had a library book for a very long time that I’ve been afraid to bring back because I would have to pay. What should I do?
Great news! If you bring the item back before the end of the amnesty period, you will not be charged! No replacement cost, no overdue fees. We just want our material back.
3. Wait, does this mean if I have something checked out and don’t bring it back, I can use the library again?
If you have truly lost an item, you are still responsible for compensating the library for the loss. If you have an item checked out to your account that is not returned and is past the due date, you will not be able to check out physical items from the library until the item is returned or the replacement cost is paid. All other services are still available to you.
4. How long does amnesty last?
Fine amnesty has been extended through the end of 2021.
5. What do I need to do to have my overdue fines forgiven?
If you had any fines or fees (excluding replacement costs) charged prior to March 16, 2020, those fees have already been waived!
6. I paid the replacement charge for an item before the library closed on March 16, 2020. Can I have my money back?
We appreciate your honesty and work to replace lost, taxpayer-funded material! Unfortunately, we cannot offer refunds on payments that have already been made. For this initiative, the starting point is March 16, 2020. Moving forward, we hope that our policy updates in response to COVID-19 benefit all of our patrons, including you!
