The Memory Lab offers a free way to digitize and preserve personal or family histories. Our Do-It-Yourself model provides step-by-step instructions to use state-of-the-art equipment, allowing you to control the process from start to finish. Bring your letters, photographs, cassette tapes, home movies, and other materials plus a storage device for digital files, and we provide the instruction, equipment, and support.
What makes up the library’s Memory Lab? Equipment and information for converting records and scrapbook items you have in analog formats into digital files that are easy to share and offer quality preservation. The Lab can currently support the following formats: VHS, cassette tapes, 8mm film, Super 8 film, vinyl records, photographs, negatives, and slides, and all types of paper documents.
Community members can book a 30-minute training session and then be able to reserve time in the lab, available in three hour blocks. The Memory Lab is open Monday - Friday by appointment.

OUR STORY
The Story Center and Memory Lab were launched In December 2023 when the Mellon Foundation accepted a proposal from the library for a $1 million five-year start-up plan to create an enhanced facility to promote local history and preserve and share the memories and heirlooms of Boyle County residents. Our library had established a basic Memory Lab through an earlier grant award from Mellon, and its promise sparked us to think bigger. We are now working with local historical groups to support their collections and provide expertise as we work toward a new physical and digital home to widen access and awareness of the stories that strengthen our sense of community, strengthen family bonds, and build local pride.
