July marks over thirty years since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA.) Since that time our country has made great strides in protecting people against discrimination based on disability.
According to the United States Census Bureau, an estimated 42.5 million Americans live with a disability. This month serves as an opportunity to honor the contributions of these individuals as we strive to create a better environment for the differently abled among us.
We invite you to explore the following community resources devoted to persons with disabilities:
- Central Kentucky Interpreter Referral (https://ckira.org/) - Provides accessibility by offering American Sign Language interpreting services for the deaf and hard of hearing
- Family Services Association of Boyle County (https://www.fsaboylecounty.org/) - Provides short-term emergency assistance to low-income families in our county who are experiencing temporary hardships
